Newport Beach is a SUP paradise, whether you are looking to go for a relaxing paddle, practice paddle board yoga, try your hand at SUP fishing, go for an open ocean excursion, or catch some waves with SUP surfing.

Both Lido and Balboa islands are located within Newport Bay with Balboa peninsula to protect them from the open ocean, thus making it ideal for SUP yoga or a casual and relaxing paddle around the bay and the islands. There are ideal spots to paddle around for an hour or two, or you could make a full day of it to explore the coastal delights of the paddle boarding spots in the area. Check out the private boats and coastal homes as you paddle around Lido Isle, stop on Balboa Island to try out some of the great eateries on Marine Avenue for lunch or dinner, or enjoy the vibrant nightlife of Balboa Peninsula after your day of supping. If you are planning on stopping to check out the islands or the peninsula by foot, make sure you bring something to lock up your paddle board and SUP paddle! Alternately, if you’re looking to spend the entire day on the water, don’t forget to pack plenty of water as well as some lunch, snacks, and sunscreen in a dry bag to make sure everything stays dry while on the water. Also, if you get tired of neighborhood views, you can always paddle a little north toward the wetlands of Upper Newport Bay for some pretty serious bird watching. If you’re looking to go paddle board fishing in the upper bay, we recommend checking for any restrictions due to wetland conservation efforts.

If the open ocean is more your thing, you’ll want to explore the south side of the peninsula with its deep blue waters and long stretch of beautiful beach. Consider a tour up to Hunting Beach or down to Laguna Beach for a full day event checking out the various coves and secluded beaches along the shores between Newport and Laguna beaches. Another fun adventure is to go for a sunset paddle and just enjoy being out in the middle of the vast expanse of the ocean amongst the colors of the gorgeous Southern Californian sunset. And for all the surfers out there, Balboa Peninsula is home to many famous surf spots, with peninsula starting on the west side at “Blackies”, and ending on the south-eastern tip at “The Wedge”, so make sure you check out all the spots for an epic paddle board surfing experience as well!
